C-3 washer

I was checking under my car again today at the starter. I noticed that I had what looked like some arking from the negative battery cable on the solenoid and the star washer. It must have came lose and jumped fire at that point? Where can one find those star washers? At the local parts store? For when I put my new rebuilt matching number starter that John Pirkel restored for me.

They can be found at the dealer or a Corvette aftermarket supplier; maybe even the local auto parts store that carry the "Help" brand. Also, the other day I was at Lowes and saw star washers in their specialty fastener section. However I don't know if they were the exact size and shape but they were close.

I've found with the hardware stores its hit and miss whether the part is the same but it sure is nice when they match and cost a fraction of the dealer or Corvette supplier prices.

The washers are EXTERNAL TOOTH STAR WASHERS. You have numerous options, including:

1) Purchase the washers from GM. The 3/8" ID washer (for the battery + cable) is still available under the original part number of GM #138489. $4.25/EACH.

The washers for the ground cable (block to frame) are now known as GM #11501869. These are actually an M8 (metric) washer, but the ID difference is virtually imperceptible and they replace the original 5/16" washer perfectly. These GM LIST for $4.62/EACH.

2) Go to just about any decent hardware store and buy two 5/16" ID external tooth star washers and one 3/8" external tooth star washer for about 10 cents each.

Your choice.
