C2 Wiring at the Regulator -1966

Can someone please tell me where the ground wire attaches to at the regulator. That is, under which screw . One of the mounting ones? The same one as the capacitor? One of the cover screws? Or somewhere else.

    Thanks,

    Bob

The ground goes under the screw with the capacitor mount....
Actually, the capacitor mounts with the ground... if you had a radio delete you wouldn't have a capacitor. Don't forget to use a star washer.

Thanks Steve. Can you also tell me the proper order of the wire, clamp, washer, screw, etc. Thanks.

        Hello Steve,

I finally found the ground wire diagram in the AIM. As expected, it's just as you said. It doesn't show any particular order, but all the other grounding straps and ground wires show the star washer first, then the item to be gounded followed by the rest of the hardware. Unless told other wise, I guess I'll just follow that order. Thanks.

            Add on...

The reason for the use of toothed washers at various electrical connection points is to insure the teeth on the washer BITE through any paint like that used on regulator covers, frame rails, radiator supports, Etc. to give a solid metal to metal contact for electrical transfer. Hence, the assy sequence is contact surface, toothed washer, then electrical lugs and attaching bolt head last...

              Bob,

Can you reference the AIM section? In U69 A6 it shows just the capacitor under and existing screw. On mine the ground wire is under one of the mounting screws

                Steve,

Are you saying the black wire with the ring terminal mounts under the same screw as the radio capacitor? It doesn't look like it will reach. On my 66 the wire mounts to one of the 3 regulator mounting screws. Of course I now realize those screws are insulated by the rubber well nuts.

I am not concerned with judging but what is electrically correct

                  Randy -

The attachment of the harness ground wire to the voltage regulator base wasn't shown in the 1966 A.I.M. - they forgot it; the sheet (UPC 6, sheet B4) was revised in June '66 for the '67 A.I.M., and shows that ground wire ring terminal and its attaching screw.

The hole in the regulator base is on the rear face, near the top; it's for the ground wire and for the radio capacitor, both attached with the ground wire screw. I'd suggest moving your ground wire to the correct hole in the regulator base - if the rubber well-nut deteriorates, you could lose the ground to the regulator, at which point the charging system goes on vacation.

The whole fender well is insulated. Its fiberglass!! The ground wire should wrap around the regulator to the grounding screw...which also happens to be the mount/ground point for the capacitor if radio equipped. Grounding under the regulator mounting screws is electrically the same point. If you use one of those screw points you should still use the star washer for a good ground.
