    E-Bay

Is there ANY CHANCE AT ALL that there is an organization on e-bay that PROVIDES LESS CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT E-BAY?? Nominees are welcomed.
The "seller" of a set of hubcaps has just informed me that it will take $65 to ship them from Ontario CA to Glendale AZ. No shipping amounts or
were stipulated in the ad - but I'm hard pressed to IMAGINE a UPS charge of more than $30.......
I've asked him for an address so I can have someone pick them up - please remember that these were advertised as "2 good" and "2 repair" AND WITHOUT SPINNERS. I have spinners and thought this might be an opportunity.......$65 shipping tells me that he either NO LONGER has the caps....or that he NEVER HAD THE CAPS,,,,

Or he didn't get enough on the bid so he's subsidizing it with the shipping.

        Re: E-Bay

As other have mentioned, he may just be trying to make up the difference on a low selling price.

        Or,

He maybe using one of those "Pack and Ship" places to get these to you. They typically tag on an amount equal to the actual shipping price.

It's come to a point where you really need to ask alot of questions before you bid anymore.

hope you get it worked out.

          Re: E-Bay

I got tired of playing this game myself and set up my own FedEx account. When I feel the seller is padding the shipping I just provide a shipping number and tell him to drop it off at the nearest FedEx. So far no problems with sellers saying no can do.

            Re: E-Bay

Loren, I ship a lot of UPS packages daily. No way could your package come close to costing $65.00. Even if it's oversize and the dim weight is used instead of the actual weight. No I agree with you that you are getting ripped big time. Happened to me last year on a sweeper I bought on Ebay. I bought one of those 8 lb jobs. Price was right for sure and the thing was brand new. But the shipping was over $50.00. I was too dumb when bidding to check out the shipping charge. Later when I won the bidding I said to myself no wonder no one was outbidding me. 8 lb sweeper shouldn't cost that much to ship 4 states away. John

I'm sorry - trying to make up the difference

in shipping charges? DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO RUN THE AD!!
When the ad reads two good two bad( WITHOUT "SPINNERS". I'm hoping at that price - AS THE ONLY BIDDER - to find one that's reasonable and one that I can save. BUT I WOULD NOT PAY $65 FOR SHIPMENT OF A SET OF NEW REPRO'S - or, as they're referred to in Arizona, "auction caps".

Same thing happened to me on a set of PO2 covers, people will try anything to make a extra buck on eBay. Just be careful and watch out.

                      Re: E-Bay

That is really the truth about asking questions. And even then, you don't know if they are answered correctly.

I'm finding that some are doing the lying by omission. For example, you find a car with no engine, transmission junk, but nice interior, and the ad will go only.

"A great 19xx car, it has one of the cleanest interiors we have ever had. You will love this interior."

No mention of the missing engine, bad transmission, and so on. So therefore, they didn't lie and they didn't mislead.

i agree some people on e-bay pad the shipping knowing all to well that the shipping isn't near what they charge you

                          Re: E-Bay

Several months back I raised the question about outrageous Ebay shipping charges for a single bolt with a $8.00 shipping charge. The seller responded on this forum and explained that it cost the same amount if it was an ounce or a pound. I still question his reasoning and have decided not to bid on an inflated shipping charge, no matter who the seller is, NCRS member or not. The seller lists many items on Ebay and appears to sell quality and accurate used Corvette parts and has many bidders meeting his reserve price. In my little protest to inflated shipping charges, I quietly refuse to bid and will look elsewhere for my parts.

                            Re: E-Bay

Unfortunately , he is right. Price anything with UPS and you find they usually have steps in the price, and so you get hit with a minimum price.

The issue isn't so much the shipping company as the shipper. While you might have a real light item ship for $10 on UPS, it could go for $1.50 with USPS maybe. But the seller can call UPS and they pick up, as opposed to the seller driving over to the post office, standing in line, paying for the package, and then driving back home. As more than one person has said, if it is a business, are they expected to do that for free? An hour or more thrown away?

The problem partially lies in how we view eBay. Many of us are just us, plain old private guys selling extra stuff. Same as the swap meets were years ago, clearing out our extra stuff. So we advertise it, and when the win comes in at $10, and we paid $8 for it two years ago before we couldn't use it, we think in terms of profit.

But a business looks at it as they have to pay taxes, employees, social security, unemployment, rent, and so on. So if they spent an hour of time on that $10 item, they have gone in the hole $30 or more. It would have been cheaper to throw it in the trash.

It may seem unfair, it may seem wrong, but businesses have to operate different than the typical hobbyist.

It is about the same way with the dealer fees on cars on eBay. You see them tacking on lots of fees. Some are required - taxes, registration, transfers, and such. But the $299 or $499 document fee is a bit outrageous. They are doing that to cover their operating expenses of handling and selling the car. I figure they should build that into the price, especially in an auction, so that the winning bid is the bottom line, not the top line.

But it isn't, and that is the way it is.

As such, I spend far too much time on eBay, as I figure all prices with shipping. So the $15 item may actually be cheaper than the $10 item because the shipping is lower, or maybe not. But I figure the total, not just the bid, so that I know what I am really spending, instead of the bid price.

Re: E-Bay - How to report excessive shipping

If the shipping irks you on these auctions, go to the bottom and click the Report This Item link.

You can go through the menu, selecting these. Each must be highlighted for the Continue> to show:

                              Step 1: Listing policy violations
Step 2: Circumvention of eBay fees
Step 3: Excessive shipping and handling

                              Click Continue>

This step is important or you have wasted your time. Click Email us to send the report. This opens the report and lets the auction number get reported, otherwise you have done nothing to this point. Be sure the auction number is there and click Send.

They will send this message back to you once successful:

Thank you for taking the time to report this listing for violation of
                              our Excessive Shipping Charges policy.

We are working hard to combat the practice of excessive shipping charges
on eBay and very much appreciate your help in identifying sellers who
you believe are charging excessively for shipping. Please continue to
report these types of listings to us. We can only clean up this problem
                              by working together.
