Bob-----
I did read your earlier post on this. However, what I interpreted you to be asking is not whether the numbers are correct (since both boxes have the same GM casting numbers), but whether the configuration and location of the numbers on one box or the other is correct for a 1970. As far as the configuration and location goes, I have no information, at all, as to what would be "correct" for a 1970.
I can tell you that I think that the 5677649 casting number is correct. However, it's not just correct for 1970, it's correct all 63-82 Corvettes. So, that number won't differentiate one year from another.
1969 through 1982 used an aluminum top cover. All of the ones that I've seen are devoid of any sort of visible casting numbers. However, it may be that some had them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Thanks Joe
Bob I went to my original owner 70 and put a piece of paper on the original steering gear and made an impression of the raised numbers before Joe answered your question. The raised numbers on my steering gear are just as Joe has stated, 5677849. The raised numbers are located on the left side of the gear as mounted in my car with the left side being next to the vacuum tank. There is also a large S on this side. It was real easy to make the impression. Spent more time looking for a angle to read the numbers with the unit mounted in the car than it took to make the impression. There are numbers on my 70's aluminum top piece. Between the bolt on the top left of the gear retaining the aluminum top and the centering adjustment are some raised numbers. The long number first line closest to the bolt reads (this was hard to get an accurate reading, so the number is only what I can make out, some numbers are easier that others) 7902287. The first, third, fourth, fifth, and last numbers are easily identified. Then second number sure looks like a 9, the 8 is a mayby. Then there are a few numbers/letters?, unable to make it out below the first line of numbers. Below this is clearly the number 13. Looking over the fender at these numbers on the aluminum top they are seen as upside down and read right to left.- Top
