What would S1 mean on 64 engine Pad

I had a friend ask to go look at his brother's 1964 coupe because he wants to sell it. I went to look at the pad and it was clean except for a S1 on the very right of the pad. I did not get a look at the casting number. The motor was rebuilt several years ago and the owner really did not think much that it had been decked until I told him the value difference it could mean. The car is quite well optioned: Air conditioning, Power Steering, Power Brakes, automatic, Power Windows, Tinted windows. I really wasn't able to help him on price because of the block. The front end had dameage and was repaired in the past also. Could of the engine been swapped out without him knowing?????

I know of at least one case where the machine shop stamped a code on the pad to identify it as their work. It was a '65 coupe that I formerly owned, and it had a "4-4" on the pad. This car has gone on to earn multiple Top Flites.
