    327 id

I have a small journal 327 I pulled from a '66 Impala a few years ago. I was able to drive it and it ran great. It has flat tops and a GM hydraulic cam, standard bore/crank, GM bearings etc. I could use some help identifying it. Numbers as follows; cast# 3858174 dated L225 pad FOII9HCH (no vin#)
    heads 461's dated L35 & L165 cast iron intake# 3844459
Why no vin#? Could this be a replacement engine prior to the CE designation? And from/for what? Thanks in advance Frank #44725

    Frank,
IT looks like you have the original engine from that '66 Impala. (not a CE replacement) Casting number is 327 (used '64-'67) Suffix code is 327/275hp with P/G trans. Should have a hydraulic cam, good heads and a Q-Jet. Cast on Dec 22nd '65 & assembled on Jan 19th '66. No VIN derivitives were used on "non-hipo" engines that year in Pass cars, that I know of. Sounds like it has it's orig. heads but the intake may have been changed. (check the date)

Thanks very much for your response. You have answered my questions. I am surprised to find a nice matching block & heads unmolested. The car was totally crushed by a huge oak tree & the interior filled up with water during the 2004 hurricanes. Thanks again Frank #44725

Thanks for your reply. The engine did have a small holley four barrell and I still have it. I could not find the three character engine code and thats what made me wonder. Thanks again Frank #44725

The Holleys on a 275hp 327 passenger car with an HCH suffix were List 3230.

Your 3844459 intake was used on 300hp 327's in 1963-4-5 with a Carter AFB for all lines of Chevys.

I have three cast iron intakes and I think I read the numbers off the wrong one. I will check the numbers on the Holley. What I am really interested in is the block and heads, will freshen them up and keep 'em around. Thanks Frank #44725
