    C1 Gas Smell

The latest Corvette Restorer (Fall 2007) has an excellent article by John Hinckley on several things to check in order to reduce fuel odors in the passenger compartment. One of those is a hose from the Fuel filler cavity to a body opening in front of the rear wheel. John does not mentione the hose size and the assembly manual does not detail this hose. This is a very difficult location to get to with the fuel tank in place, so I want to have the right size hose the first time. Does anyone know the I.D. of the hose that is needed to fit over the nipple at the fuel filler cavity drain? Thanks in advance, Jim!

    Hey, Jim,

On my '62, which still has the original hose, it measures 5/16 ID and 1/2 OD and looks to be approx. 20 inches in length. The hose extends into the wheel well area from the bottom of the body shell 6 1/2 inches. Am sure you will have to remove the gas tank cover in order to slip the upper end of new hose onto the nipple. You can probably insert the new hose from the wheel well area pushing up plenty until you can reach into the tank area to try to attach the hose to nipple. Hope tank removal isn't necessary.

      Jim -

I don't have the dimensions, but the nipple in '57 was #3710143, and the drain hose was #3710142; shown in Section "E", sheet 3.00, which never made it into the '56-'57 assembly manual copies available today.

Since my 62 tank is installed but the cover is still loose, I tried, unsuccessfully to reach the nipple, but could not. Possibly someone with a skinny, long arm could reach the nipple in order to push on the new hose. A tool of some sort might also come in handy to guide the hose end onto the nipple, but pushing hard enough to get it on the nipple might be difficult.

          Jim,
It's a bit tricky but it can be done with the gas tank cover off and the tank in place. I did it on my 61. I slid a phillips screw driver through the nipple from the gas cap side and used it as a guide. Slid the hose through the hole in the lower body and into the gas tank cavity finding the end of the screwdrinver shaft. I WD-40'd the inside of the hose and the shrewdriver shaft to ease of installation. With the hose started on the shaft I used a small set of vise grips on the outside of the hose and slid the hose into place. Need lots of patience. Also may want to consider removing the rubber tank filler hose to give you a little more room. I got my hose from Dr. Rebuild but I'm sure Paragon and CC would sell them also. Good Luck.

            Hi Jim,

I too had a serious gas odor problem with my 62. With the help of this board I discovered that 62s are supossed to have non-vented gas caps as the tank on a 62 is vented. 58 through 61 I beleive should have a vented gas cap. The filler tube on a 62 is also shorter and when the tank is full you get a lot of slosh up the filler tube. CC and Paragon only list vented caps for 58 to 62. I bought a Stant non-vented cap at the local parts store for about 7 bucks problem solved.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, details and tips and tricks! Don't you just hate when you find out that something got missed and it requires two steps back? At least I had not yet installed the cover and it appears that removing the filler neck may ease the process! Thanks again, Jim

                No need to guess...

It's pretty well documented that the change from a non-vented tank to a vented tank was authorized by engineering change on 11/15/56. That means '57L-62 Corvettes used sealed or non-vented gas caps since their tanks were already vented....

If you have a "small person" in the house recruit them to help install the hose.
