69 q-jet gasket..........

hello everyone,

had to take off the carb to get rebuilt and was wondering what the correct gasket application (between carb and manifold) was and also a good source for the correct one (doc, cc, gm? etc). from what i saw of the current gasket, it appeared to be a black rubber type. the carb is #702907 (350/350hp, 4 speed). thanks!

Your application requires a stainless steel baffle + gasket. The original gasket was a "composition" type gasket. It had a steel core and some sort of thin gasket material bonded to both sides. I don't know if this type of gasket is available today. If it is, I expect that Dr. Rebuild will have it.

The original gasket was definitely not rubber or anything like rubber. It was fairly thin----maybe 3/32" to 1/8", or so.

joe, where does the stainless steel baffle go? between the carb and manifold?

you should consider blocking the heat passage

You should consider blocking the heat crossover passage that goes under the carb. This can be done with the intake on the car by using small cup type plugs like the front oil passages - they come in various sizes, or if the intake is off, then the holes can be tapped for pipe plugs. That way, you can just use a standard carb base gasket and not worry about the whistling from a leaking stainless shim.

The stainless steel shim goes between the carburetor base and the gasket. However, I also recommend plugging the carb heat slot. Basically, this makes the stainless steel shim superfluous. However, if originality is a concern, you still need to use it as it can be discerned.

clarification......

thanks for the responses. joe, i did find the gasket and stainless steel baffle plate in doc rebuilds catalogues. i just wanted to clarify one more point. in his catalogue i think he made an error as it says under the q-jet stainless baffle plate part :"mount this plate between the above q jet gasket and the intake manifold". as you stated above joe and according to my AIM isnt the order: base of carb, steel baffle plate, gasket and then manifold? thanks again.

I recomend pluging the holes also. Joe Lucia told me about that several years ago. I got some small freeze plugs and lightly tapped into the holes. Tom
