Sound like floats may be set too high. Does fuel leak out after the vehicle is shut off or while running?

i use the carter master rebuild kits which have a secondary spring to assist the float fully seating the needle in the seat. mike

Turbo charged Corvair Carb kits will stop it in most cases, I wrote about this so many years ago I thought every knew that by now.Go to Corvair on e-bay they still sell them even some parts houses .They used the same Carb but for the choke area.

Hi Chuck My 54 basically pops only on choke being pulled almost all the way out. This is when you see gas buildup at the throats and then running out. It then slacks off and then just a small amount after that appears and the same after running. If it were either and or or both as you replied what would it be? Float is set at 1/2 inch when just touching needle and 2 3/8 as to specs.Other emails talk about the corvair kits with stronger springs to seat the needle in the seat. Can the chokes be set so the throttle works the increase in idle when pulling choke out some Mine only works when choke is almost all the way out. Thanks again new member and 54 owner Brad in Wash State

Re: 54 corvette carbs and odors

              Hi Brad,

On my '54 we had fuel leaking out of the intake after the vehicle ran for a short period of time and then shortly after it was shut off. Found the problem to be debris sticking the needle valves partially open. This debris was coming from the top screen threaded flat caps which for my car happened to be aluminum. The aluminum threads allowing beading out the top of the carbs and when we would tighten them they would leave little aluminum pieces which got past the top screens which were not seated properly. Our fix was to clean out the debris, properly seat the screens and replace the aluminum flat caps with brass ones. Both brass and aluminum were used but there has been debate on when the aluminum ones were used by s/n. I have no experience with the Corvair rebuild parts, I have only used the Corvette YH kits.

We do adjust the float settings tighter than specifications (needle closes sooner). We use vacuum gauges to balance the 3 carbs. With extreme caution, you may want to pull off your intake and see which carb(s) are pumping out the fuel.

My '54's all get full choke when cold until they pop and then I immediately run without choke.

Hi Chuck again. Thanks for the responce on the carbs again. In review on my choke when I pull it out for start, That is when I get the buildup of gas in the throat end leading to filter covers. I am set at 1/2 inch now on the floats when just touching the seat, no spring compression. which way and how much can I adjust the floats and still have car run fine with adjustments and not run out the ends? thanks again and you are my only responder on this and will use you so that I may be able to help others. Any idea of correct ignition shielding for 54 and cost. Thanks again Brad Hake.

                    Brad,

Did you remove the air cleaner manifold and see which carbs are spewing fuel? Do that first then adjust the float in that carb to close the needle valve a bit sooner. 1/16th at a time.

For ignition shielding try Jack Kershlis @ (602) 234-5286 or Lyle Hill @ (330) 927-2381. Been a while since I priced them but I would expect to pay north of $2500 for a nice set.

Hello again. I adjusted all floats to 9/16 and that slowed the fuel to just a small wet spot that didnt drip so tried 5/8 and got a puddling at throats. should I go back to 9/16 or less. Also all screens appear clean. Does full choke have a play on fuel coming into this area. Thanks all of you for the valued input. Brad.

Choke will change the volume of air flow through the carbs. I'd set them a heavy 1/2" and see what gives. Are they all behaving the same or one particular carb?

If so I will back off to 9/16 to 1/2 and live with it. Boy these old vettes are Engineering pieces of Oh thats right I think I have a faMILY. bRAD AGAIN.
