    Coker Tire Air Presure??

    Hi all,

For driving, I have Coker wide whitewall radials on my 1960. The max pressure recommended on the tire is 35 psi. The owners manual calls for 24. The Coker website is pretty worthless because it says nothing but to use the pressure recommended on the tire and there is no recommended pressure on the tire - only the max, just as on any other tire. I believe I am supposed to use 35 for the repro bias ply, but I am running the radials.

So, what pressure should I use? The max of 35 or the rec of 24?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,

A general rule is more is better up to the maximum.

Tires will run cooler, last longer and handle better at higher pressures. Yes, the ride will suffer some, but not a lot.

I run the radials on my 57 at about 35.

24 is the minimum safe pressure to support the load and will give the best ride quality. Higher pressure will improve steering response, overall handling, and lower rolling resistance, which reduces fuel consumption, but the ride quality will be a bit harsher.

Run it as high as you can stand it up to the placarded maximum 35 cold. Some higher speed rated tires are placarded as high as 51 psi cold.

As an overall compromise, I recommend 32 cold for C2s, 34/32 if it's a big block. Since C1s are also front heavy you might find a little front bias is best.

I have Coker Classic tires on my 1960 and run them at 32 psi (cold). We just returned from a nine day 1100 mile trip around Colorado and the car/tires ran great!

I have Coker red lines on my C2 (which I know the weight distrubition is different) but mine have a tendency to lose air pressure rather quickly so I keep them up between 30-35 psi whenever I get a chance to check the air pressure. Also, a question for you? Did your Coker's have a gummy, film on the outside wall of the tires that looked dingy and gray no matter what you did to them? I have to get some fine steel wool and a tire cleaning compound (maybe Wesley's Bleach White), I was just wondering if you had similar problems with your Coker's?

Yes, they had a "film" on them. I use a rough sponge which is green on one side and blue on the other (Target package of four or eight). I wet the tire and add Meguiar's NXT car wash directly on the sponge. All you need now is a little elbow grease, and rinse when you need a break. It takes time. I have had the tires for 5 years and the white walls are WHITE! I do not use Wesley's Bleach White. It will start bleaching the black part of the tires lighter.
