    1967 L-88 Starter

Well, here's another one of those eBay deals. Some guy paid almost $700 for this supposedly L-88 starter (eBay #110153397902).

First of all, no L-88 starter EVER used the starter nose seen on this piece. None, EVER.

So, you say that the starter nose can always be changed to a correct one? Yes, it can. However, in this case it will also mean replacement of the armature and the lever ("fork").

So, you say all that's really important is the frame with the stamped-in numbers? Well, these stamped-in numbers do not look original to me. They might be, but they just don't look right to me, at all.

    Joe,

You are so right they used the same set of stamps for the DELCO REMY as they did the part number. I my original the DELCO REMY is all one rolled stamp. Sucker.

Yea, It's hard to believe that stamping was factory made. I think I've seen that nose on truck starters?

          Winner got burned

Fully agree -- the case stamping wanders all over the place; AND the field coils are held by large Phillips-type screws rather than slot heads (unless they changed over by 1967 MY).

BTW, your comment re replacement of armature required. Here's an New-in-Box (NIB) 1940624 for 1170352 starters ('65 L78, all L88s) with aluminum noses and 153-tooth flywheel rings; (have another identical one; string never pulled ).

I also have a NIB D4121 (1965724) armature which shows for '66-67 Corvette (427) (exc. Sp.H/Per); ie. with the cast iron nose shown in the auction. I laid these two side-by-side and could not detect any difference.

Are not all Corvette C2/C3 starter armatures interchangeable ?

The 1940624 and 1965724 are NOT interchangeable. I used to think they were, too. Once-upon-a-time, I found out the hard way that they are not.

              Marty-----

The starter nose pictured on the eBay starter was used for most 63+ applications with 14" flywheel. This included the vast majority of manual transmission applications for 1969 and later.

It also included 1968-69 applications with THM-400, which also used a 14" ring gear.

It was NEVER used for any 1967 L-88 or for any 1968 L-88. However, this nose was used for those 1969 L-88 and ZL-1 applications with THM-400 transmission.

                Addendum

Also, correct about field coil shoe retainer screws. Starters with "1107" prefix part number (like the one in the eBay auction mentioned) used SLOTTED screws. Starters with "1108" and higher prefix used PHILLIPS HEAD screws.

So, here we have a starter with the wrong nosepiece, wrong internal parts, wrong field coil screws, and a VERY dubious stamping and someone pays $700 for it! I need to get into the parts-selling business [but, I'm not going to].
