63 speedometer error

My 63 coupe speedometer appears to read about 10 mph too fast when I drive down the road. When I stop, the needle doesn't fall to zero mph, but stops at about 5 mph. When I put the car in reverse and move backward slighty, the needle falls to zero mph. I have a friend who is more technically savvy than I change speedometer gears with no result. The car has a 410 rear end. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this problem? I tried checking the achives without much success.

Is the error constant? (10mph error at all speeds) or does the error get larger the faster you go?

If the error is is constant that I would suspect the speedometer. If the error increases with speed I would spect a speed gear ratio tire size type of trouble.

I suggest checking the error at speeds of 20,30,40,50 ect to see if the error is constant or increasing.

From what you describe, my guess would be that your problem is with the instrument, itself, rather than anything "upstream" of it. But, the other things are worth checking first.

I had the gages in my 63 restored last year and I was supprised to see it had an effect on the speedometer. Several years ago I replaced the gear in my transmission so the speedometer would agree with my actual speed. Now my speedo now runs about 5 mph slow. I guess I need to replace the original gear I took out. The restored gages run nice and smooth as they probably did when new.
