Need name of part and where to find -66

Folks: Had my 66 L-36 judged for the first time at the recent NW Regional, what a awesome experience, the Top Flight (97.7) was a bonus after meeting such wonderful people. Ofcourse I now have my judging sheets and the Christmas list of items begins........

I'm missing the hard plastic/fiberglass/pressboard?? rectangular cover piece under the drivers dash pedals that covers the carpet. I have no idea what this item is called and I have searched all the usually corvette parts catalogues looking for one. I would love to find an orginal piece that goes with my org 39k mile one owner car but a nice repro is better than the point deduction.

    Your assistance is appreciated/

Keith - Congrats on the judging. Most mid-year carpets have a vinyl type piece as part of the carpet assembly on the driver's side. This is on the horizontal surface and goes up along the right side of the throttle pedal. There is nothing except carpet on the sloped portion of the floor under the pedals.

Is the vinyl piece not there or are you describing something else? If it's the vinyl piece, it's part of the carpet and I don't know if it's typically available but someone like Al Knoch might well have it.

    Good luck.

    Pete

Peter: Thanks, your correct it is the piece that goes higher up above the slop and pedals, around the carpet cut -off line, like a finishing piece to cover the edge of the carpet. Strangely I never had this piece, do not know what it is called nor where to find one. However, when I saw the other TFlight cars they all had it. I did not get a pic though nor was I able to get into a car and see it up close or feel it...........I will try AL knock though...cheers.

Sounds like the insulation piece on the firewall that the carpet tucks under. If its black and on the vertical surface above the carpet and the carpet is tucked under it then you need that insulation. Easy to purchase... a bugger to install. This is a photo of that insulation. the carpet tucks under the 1" wide area

            Item is called 'Dash Mat'...

You can see it called out in your copy of the AIM. But, as Pete said it was provided by the original carpet supplier and installs to the firewall via PIF's (push-in fasteners).

You won't find this piece in the catalogs and, to my knowledge, the repro carpet mfgrs do NOT provide a dash mat in their carpet kits. I guess they expect you'll re-use your existing original...

BUT, they often dry out, get brittle and tear up when you pull (or a prior owner) does carpet replacement and tears out the original carpet. The place to get one is from a Corvette 'bone yard' or from an original parts specialist like Paragon's 'Vintage' division...

try LIC for the mat and rubber push in plugs---i've tried paragon plugs but they seem to be softer and harder to install than LIC---good luck, phil

                Jack -

All the usual suppliers have the dash mat and rubber push-in fasteners; it was originally supplied separate from the carpets, by a different supplier, and was the second part installed on the Trim Line, after the glued-on upper insulation pads.

                  Thanks, John!

I flipped through a '65 and '67 AIM before responding and only saw the dash mat called out on UPC 1, Sheet F11 WITHOUT reference to PN. Now that I double check, the two pieces ARE called out earlier on UPC 1, Sheet E7.

Checking several catalogs in their carpet section, I couldn't find the dash mats where a couple of catalogs provided the PIF's. BUT, in rechecking the Long Island catalog, there they are!

They're NOT listed in the catalog's carpet section but are called out in the dash and radio section. Thanks for the clue, John!
