The cost saving of using less parts. The LT-1 engine cost 1970 = $447.60, 1971 = $483.00, 1972 = 483.45 They used less parts and did not charge less for the option.
Each year the price increased the cost of the car.

I'm not sure if you're asking what the difference was between the 1970 and 1971 TI systems or if you're asking why was the TI system used for 1970 and 1971 and not used for 1972.
If it's the first question, the answer is simple: there was no significant difference between the 1970 and 1971 TI system.
If it's the second question, it may have been a cost issue as Drew described. However, I have always felt that the primary reason for discontinuing the TI system was either a cost versus benefit analysis or, even more likely, a reliability problem with these systems. The 64-71 TI system was a first generation electronic ignition system. In some ways, it was really an "experimental" system that was released into PRODUCTION.
I have NOS components that would allow me to build several complete systems. However, you'd NEVER catch me installing one of these systems on a car I intended to drive and wanted to be reliable. Not even with an upgraded elctronics package. NEVER. EVER. EVER.
