    1963 Vin Tags

Momst 63 Tags I have seen just have CHEVROLET on the top of them directly above the Vin number. Others have stated, and there is a debate on the Corvette Forum, because a members tag has CHEVROLET DD embossed on it. Possible for "Delivery Date".

If that's the case though, why examples of two different tags? I've seen multiple weld spots and other anomlies, but not the "DD". Is there a cutoff or startup vin for this if it was in fact done intentionally. The car in question is a very late 63.

    example:

"DD" added approx June 15th 1963

... according to my NCRS (pocket) Corvette Spec Guide. You'll notice that the VIN tag has rounded corners. This changed to square corners 1965-67.

There was a Service Bulletin note August 1964 on how to whack the delivery date on the welded-on tags without breaking the welds; (seems a little late, IMO).

I have a fourth week in June 63 coupe also without the DD. It appears that even when the tags had the DD on the vin plate thet were rarely dated by the dealer. What was the dealer directed to do?

You have to love the factory grind marks behind the plates to make the spot weld work.

                    Joe,

A dbase I maintain of many VIN tags across all assembly plants (58-64) indicates that the "DD" (delivery date) logo started to appear in the July-August '63 time frame at most plants. I don't know exactly when the "DD" blanks made their way to the St. Louis Corvette plant.
But I can tell you that some dealers began stamping the actual delivery date on the VIN tag as early as Jan. '63 at some plants, so there must have been a directive to do so by that time. I have yet to find that actual directive, but the evidence on original cars proves that it was made by Jan. '63. Any dealer who abided by that directive would have stamped the delivery date on new arrivals, whether they were Corvettes or Corvairs, etc (and whether the VIN blank had the "DD" on it or not). Although from a practicality point of view, it was much more difficult to swing a hammer on a Corvette VIN tag than on other models...
Also, the existence of a dealer stamped delivery date or non-existence of the same does not in any way prove or disprove the authenticity of the VIN tag, since not all dealers followed this procedure, and even if they did, the practice could change by the hour, day, week, etc.

                    Verne

My July 2nd '63 car didn't have it either... It has some numbers stamped in it (looks like a 7 and a 0)

                        greetings,
                        Rob.
