Just wondering if anybody has seen a small block -66 with a J-56 valve. After a long search I came across one of these valves at a good price. I have a correct power brake master cylinder, but didn't want to use the PB without a proportioning valve. Noland's book says big blocks only.

Re: 1966 J-56 Proportioning Valve
You do not want or need a proportioning Valve on a SB even with power brakes and dual circuit master cylinder. Our local NCRS chaper (Miami Valley Chapter) has two Delco brake engineers as members. One was a member of the design team that did the disk brakes for the Corvette. The other was a chemist who has a number of patents on the lining material. They gave us a long talk about how it came to be and a lot data on the brake tests. The SB was the only engine in production when they started and the design. It was to not have power brakes or proporting anything. Thats why the calipers with different size pistons. My 65 has power brakes with dual circuit master cylinder - it stops perfectly in a straight line period. It is only limited to the friction of the tires. On the way home from a car show a gal pulled out in front of me and I stood it on its nose - 4 black marks for 180 ft straight to the stoping point.
The real culprit of bad brakes on a Corvette is the runout of the rotors and the brake lining material. Once the rotors are ture the spongy pedel is gone and the factory lining does not distroy the rotors like some aftermarket metalic linings do. If you have replaced a rotor and did not have it turned with the hub riveted or bolted in place then you are not getting your brakes worth.- Top

Re: 1966 J-56 Proportioning Valve
Larry,
I was asking the questions about proportioning valves is because I want to install power brakes so I will have a dual master cylinder instead of the single manual cylinder the car came with. It is a safety issue for me. I am not so interested in the power booster but that is how I get a dual cylinder on a 66 car. After a long hunt I have found the correct parts to do the conversion. I just went to far when I bought the J56 porportioning valve for my L-79. I came across one at a very good price and didn't want to miss the deal. I just didn't do enough research before I bought it.
Thanks for the input,Pete- Top
