I am not a mechanic but I am not afraid to tackle car related issues (particularly on my 65). What I thought would be a modest project -replace rotors and rear bearings is turning out to be taxing my skill set. If I would have known about this site before I started (I just read many posts about sending trailing arms out to pros) I probably would have dug deep in my tool box and pulled out the ultimate tool - the checkbook.
That said - it should not be a surprise that I had to remove the trailing arms because the spindles were seized. All is going well and now I have to shim the bearings. I obtained a shim set up tool but would like some advise on how to do the set up properly. I assume I install the inner race, bearing and outer races and test fit various shim sizes with outer bearing. I notice there a large washer on the outer end of the set up tool. What is the significance of that offset?
I would appreaciate step by set instructions using the set up tool ...I only want to have to do this once. If I can get this part of the project done I will be pretty pleased with myself.
Thanks in advance for you help.
