should there be a casting seam down the center on an original 3837223 thermostat housing or should it be smooth?

That helps nail it down a lot---no, it shouldn't have a seam, or now, it shouldn't be smooth?

Remember I wrote this over 25 years ago to try and show that parts change as time goes on . Weather the years I spoke about are now correct you decide! But the first housing was a cast piece showing a line down the center and a thin neck that broke easy when removing the hose so a second design was stiffened to correct the first design and so on.
Many people years ago dint understand differences in designs as a first second and so on. Even now the words design is often not used.

roy, no wonder i was confused. the 58-60 judging manual does not have all of these details. thanks for the comprehensive explaination.
