    Car or Body Job Number

I recently removed the gas tank on my '67 coupe to get the tank sticker (which surprisingly was in great shape). On the back of the body floor pan, in grease pencil is the number 2348 the same number is scrawled on the front firewall, passenger side. I expected to see a number of 1-500 as I thought this was the range they used. Has anyone seen this before? Also, is that number the job number for the body (mine is Dow-Smith) or the car at St. Louis? Would appreciate any help. Jim Baker
PS if I can ever figure out how to attach a picture, will add that- not sure what to do when it says 'optional image URL'??

Re: Car or Body Job Number

    Jim -

That's the body shop job number - A.O. Smith used a different numbering scheme than St. Louis did.

The "Optional Image URL" window is for the URL of an image that's hosted on an internet site (like a photo-hosting site); you can't attach an image here directly from your hard drive - it has to be "hosted" elsewhere.

      Jim,

STL cars have 3 digit body numbers 1-500 as you indicated. AOS cars have a letter designation followed by 1-500. I would double check and see if the first digit is actually a letter and not a number. The pic below is my 65 AOS car with job number Q189. AOS body numbers ran A1-500, B1-500, C1-500, etc. There is additional info in the archives as well.

Here is my '67 body number on the right lower firewall. The overall job number on the tank sheet is #30. Usually the last two digits of the job number will be within 5 digits of your last two numbers in the VIN. In my case the VIN is 22526, which is within that range. PT
