    62 Speedo and Tach removal

I have a restored 62 with new dash. My Speedo and Tach decided to break at the same time. Does anyone have a step-by-step procedure to pull the gauge assembly, gaining access to speedo and tach so I can ship for repair?

Get an ST-12 shop manual and 62 assembly manual, these will give you all the information needed to do the job. Rich

      For a '60:
Remove the screw holding the lower column cover.
Remove the 2 screws holding the U-Clamp for the column cover.
Remove the 2 large screws holding the column support clamp.
Place a clean thick towel over the steering column top near the front of the cluster.
Remove the 5 bolts holding the lower cluster assembly.
Remove the headlight shaft and remove then the headlight switch nut and assembly.
Remove the screw holding the wiper knob then remove the wiper switch nut and assembly.
Turn the ignition key to the lock position w/ key installed, insert a paper clip in the releas hole and rotate the switch counter clockwise removing the core, then unscrew the ignition bezel and the switch assembly.
Remove the lighter wire and the lamp assembly.
Reach up and remove the oil pressure line from behind the oil gauge.
Wiggle the rearward nose of the instrument cluster upward and rearward.
Reach up and disconnect both the speedo and tach cables.
Remove all illumination bulbs (grey wires).
Remove the turn signal bulbs (L&R - Blue wires).
Remove and record the balance of the other lamps.
Remove and record the wires on the back of the fuel, battery, and ammeter guages.
Remove the cluster ground wire from the outboard speedometer mounting screw.
Carefully lift the cluster out while tilting the rearward edge upward slightly.
Turn the cluster over and remove the other speedometer mounting screw and the speednut holding it to the top of the cluster.
Speedometer will slide out from the back of the cluster.
Remove the 2 speed nuts holding the tach in place.
Tachometer will now slide out from the back of the cluster.

I think I remembered everything..... just did it this morning!

So if I understand this correctly, I want to remove the entire cluster (top and bottow) as a unit. Do I just lower the steering colomn down and out of the way? So I keep the instrument unit and the speedo cluster intact and pull out. Will the cluster come out of the car or do I remove speedo and tach while it's still inside? I do have a St-12 and Assembly Manual, they are good, but the step by step really puts it in focus. Thanks again for all your help

            Don,

Yes, easiest method that I've found is to remove the entire cluster. Can't get the speedo & Tach out while the cluster is installed in the dash... unless you are real little!

You should remove the steering column support screws but the column may or may not move too much. Just enough to give you some wiggle room. Don't forget to cover the column with a towel to avoid paint scratches.

Took about an hour and a half, give or take. Here is what it will look like when done...
