Repainting 67 Hood Release Cable Handle

Was the hood release cable handle the standard gloss black used on 67 vettes? Also, how was the letering painted? The original cable I got had lots of chips in the lettering and it was obvious that the black was applied first as I could see it under the lettering where the white chipped away. I can't believe that they hand painted these things. Let me know. Thanks.

Kirk, Select the color and type of black paint you want to use.

Depending on if your going to have the car judged, you can use black lacquer or black enamel. Gloss or semi-gloss.

Go to the craft store and purchase some Tester white paint. The kind you used as a kid to paint models. Water based works well, but if you used lacquer black you can use enamel white. With the enamel black use water based white.

Clean/sand the old handle and mask off the areas not to be painted. Spray one or two coats of black and let dry a long time. With a small brush fill in the letters with the white paint. Now, if you used enamel white, take a lint free cloth add some paint thinner and take one easy swipe over the letters. All that should be left is perfectly filled in letter. Let it dry.

Do the same with water on the cloth if you used a water based white.

    Good luck

I shot mine with Krylon 1613, let it dry a couple of days and applied white latex paint to the lettering with a foam bruch and wiped the excess off with a damp cloth, worked like a champ.

I've used "White Out", the same stuff used for typing correction.

Doesn't react with the paint. Chuck

Re:White Ink was used originally, I believe.

          Hello;
White Ink over black satin enamel.
The same ink used to paint stencils on frames.
          Correct me if wrong.
          Hope this helps.

              It's a press fit.

But if it pulls out I have found only one way to fix it. Take it to a jeweler and have him silver solder it back together. Expensive, but it does work.

Thx Harry, I guess I should get it soldered on first and then paint it, RIGHT?? Regards Frank

                  Yes, solder first.
