Re: eagle gt tires
Bill I don't know if there is any value with the sidewall cracking at the bead. I have three of the same tire, two have more tread than the other one. The two I had on the front of my 68 were really badly worn due to having the front end aligned the day before a 1400 mile trip. Didn't really notice how bad they had become until I got home, the toe in was incorrectly set. Learning lession to get paperwork after the alignment with a reading of the alignment. I think you might find that if your tires are not mounted since you can see the cracking at the bead, just mount one and see the cracks enlarge. When I purchased my new GT flextens I was really impressed with how these new tires made the car ride so good.- Top

Re: Tire Safety
Bill,
My knowledge on C3's is almost nill, however a few things to consider based upon C2 stuff. If these tires existed before the "DOT" and do not have the DOT then they may be worth saving. It does sound like using them for driving is out, however you could put a tube inside, mount, and save just for judging.

Bill
Allen has an option. I have an original set that I keep for “big judging” such as nationals. They are in terrible shape and it makes me very nerves to drive around the block with them but they are correct, both politically and NCRS standard wise. Until some one decides that safety and drivability are a factor, I think we are stuck with keeping these useless items and going through the hassle of mounting and remounting.Mike Robb- Top

Re: Tire Safety
From my job in another life, we identified that radial tires had a safe useful life of about 6 years. We plotted the tire problems from year one to about 8 years. From year one to about year 5 the line was flat, at year 6 the line took a sharp turn up with about 50% carcass failure for one reason or another. At year 8 it was almost 100% failure. Of course this was not city driving..
As a precaution last year before the National Road Tour we replace the tires (60%+ tread remaining) on "Kermit". They were about 7 years or so old and I was afraid of tire failure on a trip from NC to Texas. I am too old and fat to change flats anymore.Dick Whittington- Top
