    C2-300 HP, Balancer Bolt?

Help! Does the '67 327/300 engine use a bolt and washer to hold the balancer(tortional damper)to the crankshaft? I say it doesn't, but my mechanic friend says it does. I 'm pretty sure the balancer is just pressed on. Would the adition of a bolt/washer affect anything adversly?
    Thanx for your help.

    Don,

The 300 HP 1967 corvettes do NOT use a bolt to retain the damper. Be careful you are using the correct damper because it's press fit and tighter then the ones with bolt. Some drill and tap for a bolt when overhauling for added insurance and peace of mind. Not sure what year GM started using the bolt in all engines.

Tim, my late production 327/300 has the retaining bolt.

As built by Flint, only SHP/FI 327s with the 8" damper have the crankshaft drilled and tapped for a damper retaining bolt; 250/300 HP engines were equipped with a pressed-on 6" damper with no center retaining bolt.

          Don-----

GM says that all 1966-67 Corvette 300 hp small blocks had the balancer retaining bolt. These engines are supposed to use crankshaft GM PART #3889304, which has the bolt tapping. Did every 66-67 Corvette 300 hp engine have the bolt? I don't know; I've not seen every one ever built.

For 66-67 300 hp engines WITH a crankshaft snout bolt, one should use balancer GM #3896903. This balancer has a lighter interference fit than balancers designed for use with crankshafts without the snout bolt.

For any 57+ 283 or 327 WITHOUT a crankshaft snout bolt one MUST use balancer 3896904 (or, another balancer with equivalent interference fit).

My Jan 67 built 300 HP did not have a bolt, but it does now.

              Hi Joe:

My April 67 300 HP did not have the bolt, and the crank was not drilled for it (although I drilled the crank and added a bolt during some recent engine work).

It is my impression that the 67 judges look for a no-bolt setup when they judge the 300 HP engine.

I've never seen a '67 300hp engine with a balancer bolt; it's not unusual for different GM references to be contradictory, but the 327/300hp engines used a pressed-on balancer.

                      Hi Brian:

Was your crankshaft already drilled and threaded for a bolt, or did you do that (as I did)?

I had it drilled & threaded.
