    1958-1961 FI Air Cleaner

I am in the process of restoring a 1961 FI car. The air cleaner that came with the car is a aftermarket fiberglass cleaner box. I would like to purchase an original, but availability and cost might cause me to go the reproduction mode. How do the current reproductions judge? Which vendor sells the best air cleaner?

    Thanks for any help!

And then you could probably get a couple of hundred bucks for your fiberglass one on ebay to offset your cost:

Jack Podell make a nice one. Had a 59 and had no deducts.

            Thanks! Loren

I have been following that auction, and try to use original parts when possible or practical. Lets see where that auction ends, but I am sure there will be one person that needs that air cleaner more that I do. I like to restore the original parts to the best of my ability, but after OJ judging at the National Convention I am of the belief that a high quality reproduction part (certain parts, not all parts) will score better than a restored or un-restored original. The reproduction-after market part must be of high quality, hence my question. Who makes the best aftermarket air cleaner and how do they judge?

            Again thanks for the response!

I remember when Dave Crane started making his air cleaners, they were spot on with all the little die markings etc. Haven't seen any of Podells up close so can't say about them.

The Dave Crane air cleaner is definitely a better reproduction than Podell's.

Thanks for the responces! Has anyone judged a Crane air cleaner?

as mike and dan have stated, the crane repos are more accurate than the previously availbale repos but when one places a Crane alonside an original, there are discernable diffeneces which may or may not be perceived by NCRS judges, depending on their expertise. mike

I'm surprised that the Podell air cleaner didn't lost points--my guess is that was at a chapter meet rather than a national. Judges at the national are too good to miss the differences.
