Back to the Corvette Image fiberglass again??

I had a chat with Jerry yesterday, and he said that several years ago they began to gel coat the outside of their panels and had NO complaints since.

Has anybody used one of the CI panels since this change, and did that make the reported bubble problems go away?

I had a fairly lengthy conversation and asked specifically what he thought the bubbling problems were caused by. He said that since his process doesn't involve 300 ton presses like the originals that the glass may be more porous and what materials are put on top becomes more critical. He said that some people have used epoxy primers that aren't compatible and that may be one of the problems. He also told me that he runs a shop himself, has installed his own panels extensively, both before and after the change to gel coated on outside surfaces, and has never had an issue there.

I'm still in need of a surround for a couple of my projects and wanted to take one last look at the C.I. panels because of the apparent non detectability from underneath, but don't even want to THINK about doing something that may haunt me later.

Also, I'd like opinions on the cosmetics of the new generation Sermersheins as far as underneath goes. I'd actually like to chat with them also, but can't find them on the internet, Driveline or any of the other publications I take. It'd probably help if I could figure out how to spell it right.

Re: Back to the Corvette Image fiberglass again??

I used a Corvette Image lower rear fender panel on my 61 270HP car about four years ago. The panel came with instructions about gel coating and the need to re-gel coat if the gel coating was removed during installation. I did remove some of the gel coating on the bonding seam, used PPG paint products with no problems with the panel. I did get a solvent pop in the seam, but this was in the area of the bonding adhesive. I would use their product again.
