Other oils are compatible. However, I would always try to use the same type of oil as is in the car (not necessarily the same brand, though). It's usually not that hard to find diesel-rated oils. If you're concerned, carry a quart or two with you.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Oil Type
I agree with Joe. You can use virtually any oil to top off - even non-detergent (SA) in virtually any SAE grade, but if you know your engine's rate of consumption and take a road trip where you might need to add, just take a bottle or two with you. I usually add a half quart when it gets down that much, and I keep a couple of quart bottles around that have a quarter or a half quart already measured out.
Other than that you usually get gouged when you have to buy oil on the road at a gas station rather than your local discount retailer.
Virtually all motor oils are compatible. It comes down to the quality of the base stock and the additive package.

Yes, one can COUNT on paying a PREMIUM PRICE for oil whenever one purchases it at a service station on the road. If one has an "oil burner", one DEFINITELY wants to carry a supply of oil with them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Oil Type
Thanks for all the responses. Fortunately my car does not usually need oil added between oil changes. But I got to thinking. If I took the car on a long road trip what would I do if it was down a quart and I was using the HD Diesel oil and I needed to add oil. Would I need to add diesel oil or would regular oil be an OK substitute.
Thanks to you responses I guess it really doesn't matter.- Top
