    1972 Heater hoses

I am replacing the heater hoses on my '72 and noticed only one, the 3/4", has the narrow grooves (4) that run the length of the hose. The other one, the 5/8", does not have these grooves. I have been told both hoses should have the grooves. Is this correct? If so does anyone know where I can purchase the 5/8" hose with the grooves? I have a source for the 3/4" hose.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

I purchased some from Doc Rebuilt for my '70.

Thanks Kurt. I still would like to know if the 5/8" hose is grooved or not. Dr. Rebuild's 5/8" hose is smooth, but is this correct for NCRS judging?

          Where is Doc Hulst?

My 1970 has grooves on both heater hoses, but it would be a stretch to use that to conclude that all 1970 or all/any 1972s MUST have both heater hoses grooved -- that said, I would expect either grooved or plain, but NOT raised ribs. In my experience raised ribs are indicative of a later manufactured hose.

My 37000 mile 72 LT-1 still has its original hoses (no longer used although in excellent condition) and both have the four grooves in them. One has a "JT" ink stamp on it and the other has either a bracket symbol or a sideways "U". I believe that the TIM & JG is pretty lenient on this and uses words like "may" have grooves. I will check later.

I am reasonably sure those grooves are in a pattern which can be decoded (using the super-secret decoder ring) to yield the manufacturer of the hose. My guess is the raised ribs serve the same purpose -- just some years later.

I am without my notes here in beautiful Bowling Green, but I believe there is a single letter ink stamp on one of my heater hoses.

Gary, I also have a 1972 LT1 with a/c. Is your car also equiped with a/c? Regardless the only difference would be the routing of the hoses. Therefore based on your car both hoses are grooved. Do you have any insight as to where I could find a good reproduction molded 5/8" hose?

Jerome, no a/c. Just PS, PB, tilt/tele, and the rest basic. I have no idea on the source of repro hoses. I bought generic black hoses and used lacquer thinner to remove the manufacturers details. Of course, I will replace the originals if I ever choose to judge the car again.

John, The JD says "The most common designs have three or four narrow grooves along their length......" Does the wording MOST COMMON open the door for some other type of hoses; like a smooth hose?

John or anyone; I have tried most of the Corvette supply houses and none of them, including Dr Rebuild, Paragon, etc have a grooved 5/8" molded hose. Do you have any ideas as to where I could look?

Doc Hulst is in the wilds of Montana for a week or so, hunting elk.

                        A pity...

the darned buggers are ALL around my house in Colorado making 'pests' of themselves (rooting up gardens, playing traffic cop on the roads, standing on the front steps & looking inside through the windows). UNFORTUNATELY, we can't shoot the buggers due to local firearm discharge laws, but they ARE real good eating!
