    can i just remove the red tab? is the cap the same except for the tab?

      1) As Terry mentioned, the cap with the red label is worth more than the correct one for your car, so I wouldn't suggest removing the label and ruining it;

      2) Notwithstanding the above, the caps are otherwise different with respect to embossments. So, removing the label won't get you the cap you need.

        I shouldn't post without checking the TIM&JG -- that will give the approximate range of the red-label gas cap. I will stand by my statement that the red-label cap in reasonable condition is more uncommon than the SEALED embossed cap.

          It's in the book...

          Your copy of the 1970-72 Judging Guide says, Interior, Section 9, Door Jamb Area:

          "...The top front of the door, forward and above the door panel, is semi-gloss to semi-flat black, the same color as the balckout in the engine compartment and under the hood."

          Note, there is no distinction on year of car or color combination...
