AFTER A FRAME OFF RESTORATION, MY 58 DEVELOPED A LOUD CREAKING UPON DECELERATION WITH OR WITHOUT THE BRAKES APPLIED. IT'S IN THE REAR AND CAN BE FELT THROUGH THE FLOOR ALMOST UNDER THE SEATS OR THE GAS TANK. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS WRAPPED AROUND THE DRIVESHAFT AND POUNDING ON THE FLOOR. NOTHING IS OUT OF PLACE AND NO MARKS OF ANY KIND ON THE UNDERCARRAIGE. IT SEEMS TO GET BETTER THE LONGER YOU DRIVE, ALMOST LIKE THE NEW REAR SPRINGS ARE SETTLING IN. COULD THEY BE BINDING OR SET UP INCORRECTLY. HOW ABOUT BUSHINGS OR BODY MOUNTS?? COULD THEY PRODUCE A LOUD CREAKING UPON WEIGHT SHIFT. NEVER GET IT ON ACCELERATION ONLY SLOWING DOWN. I THOUGHT ABOUT A PINION BEARING OR SOMETHING IN THE REAR BUT NEVER HAD A PROBLEM BEFORE REBUILD, DID NOT REBUILD THE THIRD MEMBER. ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME. THANKS YOU

Re: C-1 CHASSIS NOISE
I had two situations that had similar symptoms; first the strut rods were not tightened down enough and were slipping making noise under certain conditions. Next time it was a bad gear in the non posi rear end I put in (for better highway driving) it was the small gear that had a missing tooth. That's my only experiences with rear suspension noise...

Re: C-1 CHASSIS NOISE
it might be rear springs. my memory is not good , but i seem to remember there was a specific procedure for tightening them down [perhaps somebody else can help on this]. i believe the mounting brackets had a torque spec. if the spings are the least bit loose, you get a big racket, plus very dangerous. same for trans mount, ie properly shimmed [on my 57], and tightened. good luck. d.- Top
