    OT, "Long" oil filter question...

...for quite a few years, I've been using the spin on "long" oil filter on SB & BB engines. The NAPA crossover is # 1794... Now, I'm about to change oil in my DuraMax '06 engine and wonder if there is a somewhat equivalent filter. Thanks for your guidence. The nice guy at my Chev dealer had no clue... Best, Dennis

Dip, the only way to find out would be to get a Napa/Wix catalog and look at the dimensions section. It will show the thread size, the o.d., length, "o" ring i.d/o.d. It will take a little time, but usually you can find something

      Dennis-----

You "live dangerously" using that PF-932-equivalent oil filter for small block and big block engines, especially if you do it in a Corvette. The PF-932 is about 8" long and "hangs lower" than I'm comfortable with, especially in a low ground clearance vehicle like a Corvette. I don't think that the extra capacity is worth the risk.

In any event, your 6.6L Duramax uses a PF-2232 filter. It's about 5-1/4" long. I can't find any filter of its specifications with a greater capacity (i.e. longer). I'm not saying, for sure, that there isn't one, but if there is, I can't find it. Filters like the PF-2232 are more of a "specialized" filter and usually aren't really part of a "family" of filters with similar specs and increasing capacity. The PF-932, on the other hand, was part of the PF-25, PF-454, PF-35, PF-932 "family" of filters and had wide applications.

        also you need to know

do you need one with a oil filter by pass build it to the filter or not. GM has just change the corvette engines to using a oil filter where the bypass is built into the oil filter not in the filter adapter. a first for a SBC

          clem and Dennis-----

Yes, that's one of the big problems here. The PF-2232 has an integral bypass valve set at 15 PSI. Finding another, greater capacity filter which meets all the other necessary parameters + the 15 PSI bypass valve creates a significant problem. Filters with the 15 PSI bypass valve and the correct thread size will be hard to find. That's because filters with an integral bypass valve are the exception and not the rule.

kinda think the by pass was for the population that never changed the oil or filter, and once the filter was full of bubba goo,the by pass let the oil get to the motor---i've always disabled the by-pass in the adaptor in my motors---zero motor failure nor have i have blown up the filter---JMHO---phil

any time you start the engine the oil

by passes the filter till the pressure equalizes on both sides of the by pass valve to hold it closed.

Thanks Joe, My long filter use is only on...

...'92 454 SS, '57 StaWag 383" &, I thought, on '06 3/4 ton Duramax. On my C1, etc, I am satisfied with the OEM canister filters. In essense, I am not trying to drain my oil with the help of a speed bump. Thanks, Dennis
