    67 Interior Cardboard Piece

I have a 1967 vert 327/300hp automatic. I recently noticed that the original black cardboard piece located behind the brake and gas pedal has been ripped out and lost. Can I get a "new" one of these and from where? I'm not even sure what it's called to try and look it up in the catalogues. I also noticed that what is left of it seems to be held in place by large plastic discs with a hole in the middle. From the missing portion, I can see an empty black plastic post. Is this how the piece is held in place? If so, is it easy to remove the plastic discs without damaging them or the post? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's called "firewall insulation" and can be found in the catalogs of any of the parts supply houses. The plugs or fasteners are made of rubber and are sold by them too.

I'd recommend searching the archives for message threads on both the insulation and tricks to install the plugs. You'll find out how to make your own installation tool and use dishwashing soap as a lubricant to make installation easier.

I see the insulation under the cardboard piece, so does that mean the cardboard piece is also called firewall insulation, or does it just come with the insulation?

These pieces are available from the vendors. New "plugs" are also available. If you try to remove them without damage use some soapy solution to help ease them back thru the holes.

Installing new plugs is a bummer of a job. I used some soapy solution and tied a string on the plug to aid in pulling it back thru the hole. I also used a cut off and rounded screwdriver inserted in the hole to help push the plug in. Be careful as the tool can easily penetrate the plug, destroying it.

You might want to purchase new plugs to use for those that could not be salvaged./ They don't cost much.

Dang, how come nothin's ever easy with these cars. I'm still having a bit of troubling visualizing your picture to what appears to be in my car, but I guess they are same thing. I'm going to print your pic and compare tonight. My discs appeared to be much larger and there was a pre-existing post in one spot as if I only needed to push the disc on. Will get back to you. I am still having trouble finding the part at corvette central. Can someone give me the number - it must be that I'm not seeing it the same way as the catalogue pics? Anyway, thanks for the help.

So, the holes are in the firewall, and the plug is pushed through the cardboard piece and hole in the firewall to secure it in place. Do I have that right?

The Corvette Central part number is 482548. If you search for "firewall" on the C-Central site, you'll see the insulation and the plugs show up. Look at the diagram for part number 482550 (the plug kit) and you'll see a good diagram of how the insulation is attached.

The black "cardboard" comes with the jute backing attached. It's not two separate pieces. Thank goodness since the stuff is tricky enough to install! The insulation is one of the first things installed on the body so you'll probably need to remove your steering column and brake/clutch pedal assembly to do it.

As Tim said you may need to remove the steering column. The insulation is not under the pedal brace so you may be able to install it (difficult with nothing in the car) with the pedals in place. The carpet goes under the lower cardboard lip and the dimmer switch wiring goes behind the cardboard. The fuse block also needs to be pulled back.

              Good luck
