I have just rebuilt my LS6 454. As I have placed the heavy duty steel flywheel, I have seen trouble. I think the ring gear is too far away from the block. That means the starter gear doesn't fit correctly in the ring gear. It comes only approx. 1/2 of the width into the ring gear. Is it possible that I have the wrong starter? Are there differences in the dimensions between manual or auto? Is it possibel that I have an auto starter which is too short? Thanks.

Re: Flywheel 454
The parts catalog calls out the 3992094 flywheel for the '71 Special High Performance 454 and notes that it is designed for a dual plate clutch. The Power Manual calls out the 3963537 light weight nodualar iron flywheel. There is no mention of the clutch design for this flywheel, but I assume it is designed for a single plate 10.4 inch clutch as is the L-88 flywheel.
All 454s have "unbalanced" dampers and flywheels because external balance weight is required to dynamically balance the engine. Use of 427 parts will result in a dynamic out of balance condition in a 454. The 427 externals are zero balanced because they carry all dynamic balance weight internally.
What is the part number of the flywheel you are using?
