Throw out bearing lever / clutch

Help - I've got a '65 SB and I've just put my rebuilt motor in and it's hooked up to the (recently removed and cleaned - not rebuilt) tranny. For some reason now when I go in and depress my clutch pedal there is very , very little resistance - somehow the fork/thowout bearing is not compressing the diaphram spring at all, at least that is what it feels like. The fork was in the throwout bearing when the bellhousing was put on.

I'm near positive that the whole rod/cross shaft/etc that connects the pedal to the fork is in the same spot it was before the rebuild (I made certain to put the two nuts on the cross shaft lever exactly where they were before).

Please tell me I don't have to take the motor away from the tranny.........

(I haven't yet removed the inspection plate)

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark------

Removing the inspection cover is not going to do you any good, at all.

I would check the movement of the linkage while someone depresses and releases the clutch pedal. If the linkage appears to be moving as it should, the only reason I can think of for the problem you describe is that the release bearing somehow came off the fork prior to your installation of the trans.

Thanks Joe. I was very much afraid that was what I'd hear.

Anybody know of a good place in So Cal that is good at pulling a motor and getting into the clutch ? I've done it once, but don't have the time to do it again....

      Thanks,
      Mark

        Mark,

I wouldn't think you need to pull the motor. I've got a '63 a between me and my mechanic we've slid the tranny back away from the motor a good half dozen times. Unless things are much different on a '65, this might work for you. Plus, if you can slide it back and just get your hand in the bell housing, you may be able to feel around for your problem.
