    54 shielding new and repro

Points wise is it better to go with the new repros vs half repro and half original for the same price plus the work to clean up and paint the used units of shielding? Hope this makes sence. Also heater/defroster switch and cable complete and both Hi/ Low working for same car and price. Thanks Brad.

    It's hard to say...

You can get into the 'teeter totter' situation which is similar to a Catch-22 where reproduction parts cost you judging points on the Originality side of the ledger but give you full Condition points. Contrast that to used orignal parts that might give you full credit for Originality but loose judging points on the Condition side of the ledger.

There's no solid/proven general answer to the question you pose. Each situation has to be worked through on a part by part basis and you can run into differences of opinion regarding 'correct' scoring based on which judges are working your car that day...

Personally, I'd rather see correct factory original parts despite minor wear UNLESS they're really in BAD condition (maybe border line dangerous if one were to drive/use the car). But, sometimes (not all that often) the reproduction part is SO GOOD, it's not possible to distinguish it from the real McCoy factory original.

      Original vs. repro

      Brad,

I think there are many folks in NCRS that share Jack's opinion that a nice used part that might lose some condition points is better than an incorrect repro part that would lose some originality points. But there are cases where you will lose, say, 1 point for condition on an original part, but you would lose 1 point for originality on a repro part. So it's a wash. But if that 1 point is for an inaccurate silk screen on the underside of the repro air cleaner lid vs. a 1-point ding in the top side of an original air cleaner lid, why not use a part that looks nicest from the outside? In both cases it's a one point deduct and with the repro part you don't have to stare at a ding every time you open the hood.
