I have a 65 vette 327/350hp, according to the book it should be hydraulic lifters. They were noisey so I adjusted the same way I have many times before. With the engine running back them off till they chatter and then forward till they quit plus 1/2 additional turn. I now have tried that procedure twice on this car, still noisey lifters?? The engine was rebuilt recently before I purchased, COULD SOMEONE HAVE INSTALLED A SOLID CAM with solid lifters? How can you tell if you have solid lifters without removing the intake, or should I be looking for a different problem?
Solid lifters or hydraulic lifters? Dumb question?

Re: Solid lifters or hydraulic lifters? Dumb quest
Bill,
If you have solid lifters and used the procedure you outlined the valves would be held open and the car would run awful, if at all.
What you may have is Rhodes lifters. They are designed to bleed down at low rpm/oil pressure to reduce lift and duration of the cam and give more low end torque. As RPM increases and oil pressure comes up they will pump up to "normal". In the low RPM bleed down condition they will sound somewhat like solids.
Are you satisfied the noise is really lifters?

My first step would be to find out the
rebuilders name and look at his billing for the overhaul, for the part number of the lifters. For those of us who deal in these 40+ year old cars,
we somehow assume that ALL machine shops/rebuilders pay attention or know what they are doing - not always.- Top

if you tighten down the lifter till it stops ticking and then go 1/2 a turn and the engine does not start to miss on that cylinder you have hyd lifters. you may have "rhodes" type hyd lifters and they will "tick" like solids because of the built in bleed down slot to get better vacuum at idle and better low end power.- Top

Re: Solid lifters or hydraulic lifters? Dumb quest
Thank you for the fast responses. When I tightend the lifters the aditional 1/2 turn I didn't notice any engine miss, it actually sounded good. Put the valve covers back on, down the road a mile and it now sounds like a lot of lifter noise again. Should I turn them down an aditional 1/4 turn or try the cold adjustment method? I do not believe it is anything other than lifter noise.- Top

maybe hold a short length of garden hose to your ear and then near each lifter. maybe you just have a collapsed lifter that wont pump up. also, exhaust manifold leaks sound just like ticking lifters.- Top

Before resetting, check to see if only one or two are loose. If so, that factory lock nut may be slipping (or the cam lobe is wiped - less likely). Get a fresh lock nut and replace the bad one. Also check to make sure all the rocker studs are the same height. Sometimes one may be slipping out (but also pretty rare).

I think Loren gave some good advice. Before going any further why not try to contact the rebuilder or find the paperwork and determine exactly what kind of lifters are in the engine. Once that is known procede from there. Rich- Top

Loosen a rocker arm until the pushrod is loose, and push down on the pushrod end of the rocker arm; if it moves, it's a hydraulic lifter - if it doesn't, it's a solid lifter. The plunger in a hydraulic lifter has about 1/8" of travel.- Top
