    6 cyl engine identification

A friend at work has what he believes is an orig 6 cyl corvette engine.
He asked me, where the numbers on the engine are, in order to ident it.
I am familiar with V8, but not straight 6 cyl engines.
Can someone tell me where to look ?

Casting numbers = located just ahead of the fuel pump, in a recess above the oil pan. They will be 3835911 or 3701481
Casting date = located on the passenger side of the block, just behind the starter solenoid. They will look like "H 23 3"
Engine stamping = located on the machined pad, just to the rear of the distributor. Stamping will begin with LAY for 1953 engines.

        Brett,

        Here are the numbers:
Casting number ahead of fuel pump: He could not find one, just: GM14
        Cast date: C(or could be G) 94
        Engine stamp pad: 0661553 F 54 Y.

The person who rebuild the engine said it was "Heavy duty".

He had the engine for more than 20 years and it's in a 1940 Chevy now.

          Rainer,

Sorry to say your has not found a 1954 Corvette engine. Its should have a suffix of F54YG. The Y engine is just a Chevy 6.

Yep, and there will be the 3835911 casting numbers in the recess in front of the fuel pump area. He just needs to look alittle harder. They're there. Typical 54 engine. Could be stamped if someone needed to use it though. It would need a correct timing gear back plate. Most people don't realize that the plate is not the same. Dead give away in a corvette.

              Thanks Bob and Brett,

He will have to leave it in his '40 Chevy...
