    Basic Question Re Rear Blower

    G'day Folks,

On my '64 ex AC car, I'm trying to work out the arrangement for the left-hand front vent and the rear blower controls. I've looked and looked at different diagrams from the different venders and the assembly manual but I can't tell if there are two knobs or one. It seems there is only one knob but how does it operate two different components? LIC has the best diagram in section 39 - dash. Item #06A - $104/pr, 06CA - $115 and 06E - $81 would seem to indicate 2 x cables but I can't seem to tell where they both go. Can you show me the light?

    Bud.

Re: Basic Question Re Rear Blower

Rear blower is a seperate cable, runs along the sill to the blower switch mounted on the blower assembly at the rear. LH vent is a short cable runs fron the lh side of the dash to the LH vent only.

I'm sure that '65 A/C cars are the same ....

.... as the 1964 models. The reason Long Island shows different part #s for either year is due only to the shape of the plasic pull knob. IMO, if you have nothing now, you need their 06CA (rear blower motor cable w/AC), and 06E (LH kick-pad vent w/A/C). The reason these 2 cables are different part #s than the non-air car is because the lengths are different (different mounting locations under the instrument panel due to A/C ducts, hood release, etc.).

Of course, the RH vent cable is also different on C2 air cars, because it is activated by the "AIR PULL -- FAN" knob, under the clock and on left side.

There's also a complex electrical interconnect between the rear blower motor and the position of the center dash knobs; it's been a few years since I figured that out and I need re-training.

Thanks Wayne for your explination. Let me get this straight. If your looking at the diagram from LIC, Section 39-Dash, the right pull-cable (6), under the lighter, is for the rear blower and the one on the left, under the wiper switch, is for the LH fresh air vent. And the RH fresh air vent is operated with the pull cable at the fan switch which is in the central dash. Does that sound about right?

Oops, I forgot to ask about the two speed switch for the blower. Which switch operates that? The fan switch, center dash, would operate the heater fan so where is that little blower switch? I guess I was thinking that the cable actually operated a switch at the motor....not so huh? Then what does the cable actually open?

Hi Bud, the long left hand cable for the rear blower hooks onto the lever on the rear blower motor. It actually has 4 positions, flap slightly open, low, medium and high blower speeds in addition to opening the rear exhaust flap to let air out. The power comes from the heater switch and goes back to the rear blower. The cable does all the activating of the blower moter. When the heater (front) switch is activated, it cuts off power to the rear so you don't suck out all that nice warm or cool air from up front. Try to get power to the rear blower and manually move the lever to the 4 positions so you'll see how the lever works. The adjustments are tedious and the cable must not be kinked etc. Good luck,
            Dan

LIC sect #39 dwg is too general to be used

... for most A/C applications. Best to follow the AIM, which (in 1965) means UPC 1, sheet D8 and D10; UPC C60, sheet E7. Sheets may be slightly different for 1964.

Best to define the use of all 10 holes drilled in the bottom edge of the instrument panel, not counting the 2 holes for the steering column collar.

Going left to right -- 2 on extreme left to either side of cut-out are obviously for the headlight up/down switch on non-C60 cars. Next 2 holes are for the rear blower control ('64 & 65 coupes); unused for convertibles. Next is the cut-out for the revised location of the headlight u/d switch with C60; Its left screw hole uses the right hole of the rear blower control (located elsewhere w/C60). The RH hole of the cut-out is the same as the left hole for the LH kick pad vent cable on non-C60 cars; the right hole next to the steering column collar remains unused in this case.

Right side of steering column is easier; Next to collar, are 2 holes to mount RH kick-pad vent cable control in non-C60 cars. As mentioned in previous post, with C60 cars, this RH kick panel door control is incorporated into the "Air Pull - Fan" knob on the center console, below and to the left of the clock. With air cars, these holes are used for the LH kick-pad control cable. Finally are the 2 holes on the extreme right, next to the center console. These are for the rear blower control on C60 cars, unused on convertibles.

So on original non-Bubba'd instrument cluster panels, the following holes should show NO indication of ever having self-tapping screws inserted: (headlight roll switches are mounted with nuts; not threaded into the pot metal of the panel, and those holes are not counted below when used to mount the headlight switch)

              Non-C60 cars: holes 3,4,9 & 10 (convertibles); 3 & 4 ARE threaded on coupes, except N03 tankers [rear blower-delete]

              C60 cars: holes 1,2,3,6,9 & 10 (convertibles); 9 & 10 ARE threaded on coupes, except air tankers.

              Comments by anyone are welcome.

                  Bud -

Here's a photo of the rear blower and controls - the cable operates a lever, which positions the flap internal to the duct, and the lever also operates the cam for the multi-position blower switch. Don't forget the drain duct into the wheel well at the bottom.
