I have been looking for a small piece of trim for a 64-67 coupe and have had no luck finding one. I am hoping that someone can steer me to a vendor that might have a used one, as this part is not being reproduced. I need the little pie-shaped piece of stainless that goes on the inside of the drivers window at the rear, and fills the corner. I believe that the original GM part # was 3840585. Any leads would be appreciated.
I just did a search in e-Bay (nothing) and Google for the part number you list. In Google Pacific Corvette came up with the part number, described as follows for $100: 63-67 SEAL ASSY LH LWR INR CORN CPE. The web address is:
www.pacvette.com. I don't know if this is what you want nor do I know anything about the vendor. Hope this helps.
Pacific Corvette in Puyallup, WA is an excellent source for used Corvette parts. They are, basically, an auto dismantler but "they do things a little differently". What they do is to dismantle Corvettes right down to every usable piece AND INVENTORY THE PARTS BY THE ORIGINAL PART NUMBER SHOWN IN THE AIM. This makes identifying the piece so much easier. You just call them with a part number (from your AIM) and they can look it up in their system just like a GM dealer in "days-of-old" would have looked it up. The difference being that the part, if they have it, will be used and not new. They do have some NOS stuff, too, but their "main thing" is used parts.
My experience with Pacific Corvette is that sometimes I searched for a part number on teh web (via PartsVoice, I recall) and it will indicate that Pacific Corvette has it, but it will turn out that they have a repro part that they list in the system under the GM part. I think I did this with tie rod ends (I think) and when I called them they said they only had repro. So, just bacause it looks like on the web that they have a part, it doesn't mean that it's a real GM part.
Yes, that does happen with them. Also, they sometimes do not actually have the used part that their "inventory" says they have. But, if one is looking for a rather rare and hard-to-find item, they are a good "first call". The main advantage is that they use part numbers instead of just descriptions.
Also, the problem with inventorying and listing parts by GM part number which are actually reproduction or, even, just replacement parts is not unique to Pacific Corvette. Many vendors do this. For example, Modern Chevrolet on the east coast seems to do this quite often.
Well, there's always the J. T. Piper's Corvette Specialties of Vermillion, IL. There's a good chance they have it, either used or NOS. There's very little chance that you'll like the price, but, if all else fails........
I got a handful of them in the early 70's from the original production supplier (USM - United Shoe Machinery Co.), which they said was the last of their Engineering samples, and used them since in several restorations. Haven't seen another one since.
I was thinking that same thing this afternoon! There is so little of it showing when the door panel is on, that I am sure that a polished piece of aluminum would probably work.
