    66 - Carpet pad/glue release agents/solutions

What is best solution for removing remnants of carpet pad fibers and glue after
removing carpet from floor? I would like to do a complete cleanup before new
    installation.

It's a boring and messy job! But, you'll find 3M offers adhesive remover in a one quart can (dissolves weatherstip cement without attacking underlying paint from cosmetic surfaces) that's available from painting supply stores and many auto parts stores. It's a matter of rubbing/scrubbing and discarding spent shop towels...

I did this on my 66 about 7 or 8 years ago and I used a 2" putty knife. At first I was going to remove every trace of glue and fibers and then I realized that with the pad and carpet down, I would never feel the little bit of residue that remains when you scrape it with the putty knife. Try a small section and lay down you new pad before you go to the hassle of removing every trace.

        Eddie,

I'll second what Jack Humphrey says about the 3M Weather Strip Adhesive remover and it being a boring job, but the 3M stuff works great and won't hurt the fiberglass. Before using this product I used a wire brush and a shop vacuum to remove the carpet padding or jute material first. I then went to work with the 3M stuff using a putty knife, soft scotch Brite pads and plenty of clean rags. When you are done with the removal, wipe the entire area down with clean rags and the 3M Weather Strip Adhesive Remover and you'll be ready to install the new carpet. The 3M stuff can be purchase at O'Reiley Auto parts or at NAPA, it come in a red and white one quart can. You might want to invest in some good nitrile rubber gloves also when removing the glue.

        Regards,
