    Speedo Cable lube

So yesterday, my '66 speedo started making a 'scritching' sound (how's that for onomatopoeia?). The needle suged along with the cyclical nature of the sound.

Should I replace the cable? Or is there an effective way of lubing it? OR, is this a problem inside the spedo housing? I'd rather not drive it until I can take care of it. Suggestions?

    Thanks,

I lubed my original tach cable...

With Genuine Ford speedo cable grease (I already had it). It was chattering badly, and, desperate to save my original cable (so noisy I didn't have much hope), I pulled out the core and cleaned off the caked crud. I also flushed out the cable with carb cleaner. Put grease in the cup at the end of the cable and screwed the core back in, keeping the cup full. It now runs perfectly smoothly.

      Re: Speedo Cable lube

GM has a special cable lube like Ford too from my recollection. It is not that runny graphite stuff, that has made my tach/spedo bounce more. Rather, a kind of stiff lube that apparently has good cold/hot weather properties yet damps the transients in the cable as it rotates.....works well, but I don't recall the number of the grease....Craig

I don't have the GM number, but Ford's is...

...E6TZ-19581-A, which is an 8 oz. tub, enough for a lifetime. It's a clear, slightly amber grease, and made my cable run smooth as glass.
