The 642 flasher is intended for use at 12V with a #57 bulb. It can be used from 6V to 32V as long as the bulb used with it produces the same current. My dad's '58 Buick used one but I'm sure it was used in many other applications as well.

I agree completely. The switch is most likely your problem. They are very sensitive. There's usually a trick when pulling the handle out to make it work correctly (most) of the time. Like during judging!!!!
