    Off Road Exhaust Revisited

I examined a set of mid year off road mufflers and pipes (welded) yesterday. They are a used set that are either original or replacement. An interesting observation was that the words "OFF ROAD" in caps were stenciled on the mufflers in yellow. Has anyone else seen this? I did not copy down the numbers stamped into the muffler. Does anyone (Joe) know what they should be?

Since they are in good shape I have thought about using them with a general clean up such as having them sand blasted to remove the surface rust. Is there a way to coat these (I am not as concerned with the appearance) on either or both the inside and outside to make them last. I don't think I'll find another set in 10 years. Thanks,

    George

I bought an undercar chambered exhaust from Allen's for my '68. I got the aluminized steel instead of the stainless setup and the aluminized treatment seems to have held up well over the past couple years. I wonder if it might be possible to find a business that could apply this type treatment to your exhaust? Just a thought.

Another alternative, that may be costly but effective, is to use Jet-Hot ceramic coating like they apply to headers. I don't know it it's a dip and bake process or spray and bake process, and it wouldn't look stock, but I bet it would protect well. I know it is well touted to prevent header rust and burnout. They are based in Phoneix if I recall correctly...here's their URL below....Craig

I'm fairly certain the Jet Hot treatment is a spray and bake procedure and they can also do the inside, though I don't know if they would be able to do the inside of the entire length of a welded exhaust system. They have numerous colors/finishes, so you might be able to get sort of close color-wise to original, but it obviously wouldn't pass as original.

As I recall, the number is 384573_. I don't recall what the last digit is, but if it has those first 6 digits, it will be the GM system and whatever the last digit is will be a moot point. I think that the number was the same on either side muffler since the same, basic muffler was used to make up either side's assembly. Just the exhaust pipes, tail pipes and muffler rear brackets were different from side-to-side.

            N. Adams' book, page 238, shows the part numbers to be 3845735 for the left muffler and 3845736 for the right. The book also states the only external differences are clamped front joints for standard mufflers and welded front joints for N11 or off-road mufflers. A photo on page 366 in the '66 section shows the muffler has embossed (raised letters) with the part number, embossed "GM" and what may be a manufacturing date code. The numbers are "1 2 446 7" and another character I can't make out, an "A" perhaps? The words "OFF ROAD ASSEMBLY" have been applied with a stencil. Apparently the external differences are more apparent than what Noland referred to in the '64 section.
