I am going over some detail items on my 71 LS5. One is shock absorber codes. Want to make sure the codes for a standard suspension car is. Front is a DG and VS for the rear shocks. Also what is the general location that one finds the codes placed on the shocks. Thanks
Does anyone know the approximant size of the labels for the shock. I am going to make some as I can not find any with the codes on them that the JM calls for.

Kelly,
I can measure the labels on my 1970, however they are not the original labels -- they are reproductions. I wish I could remember the company i got them from, it is in Northern Illinois. I should see the vendor at the Chevy Vette Fest show in Rosemont, IL, this weekend -- if you can wait. I'm not sure he has the right codes for your 1971, but he made them from GM's code sheet -- which he showed me back in the day when I was TL and he was partners with Tim Partridge in the wire harness and erstwhile shock absorber venture.

Kelly,
I have a good photo of the right rear shock label from my 71. The code was long gone but the paper label was in relatively good condition. It's about 3 inches down from the top of tube and faces the center of the car but turned slightly to the rear. Is this, or is there, a typical location?????
Regards,
Alan
PS: A judge could see it in that position if he really wanted to.

On the rears I usually see them (when I used to do Chassis ) on the upper cover -- the larger diameter part for the standard shocks. Almost anywhere on that will do, but most guys installing reproductions put them where the judges can see them.
On the fronts don't fret about it -- one can almost not see the labels anyway.
