Re: 1959 FI Fuel filter and fittings?

Ian, With John Hinckley's help I got on the ebay listings. Notice both of the filters are listed by the same fellow. hotrod?? Anyhow the 2nd listing you gave me is for the pretty chrome plated one that he calls silver. That filter is NOT CORRECT for a 59 to 61. THe seller is honest and calls it like it is. The chrome filter has the 3/8 fittings. You need the 5/16.
Now on the first listing the seller does not list the fitting size but just eyeballing it the fitting appears to be large also but you would need to email him to find out.
These filters were made by Holley in several configurations. I have seen a variety of ways that the in and out were marked. You want the In and Out in raised letters. Recently at Carlisle one of my customers brought one to me and the Inlet and Outlet-In & Out were stamped into the sheet metal cannister.
These filters were a generic filter in their days and not really a part made for a Corvete. Corvette just bought them off the shelf. Ford used a ton of these, certain heaters had them and a host of others. The elements for this filter are the AC GF-157. I believe Fram's number is G2. Wix has a very good element also. Cadillac used the same cannister and so did some off road equipment.
One more thing Ian. If you buy a chrome one and take it to a plater and have it stripped and cad plated you will be in deep trouble my friend. The crap from all the chemicals gets trapped between the inner and outer linings of the filter and then good bye FI. Been there for sure. That's why I have little love for this pesky filter. If you get one don't glass bead it. Just remove the paint the hard way as the glass bead gets trapped between the linings also. You can try and wash it out but it isn't easy.
One last for sure: Be very leary of the repro as it is has some issues. The inner lining is expoxied in and the epoxy breaks loose and trashes the FI major league. Read this while you can as I will probably delete it soon as I don't like to knock other peoples repro crap. John D.

        Hi john,

Thanks for the good info. The guy canceled the chrome one for some reason, and posted that it was for 60's ford. maybe someone bought it off him offline?

The second one he posted is 5/16 female flare. I'm pretty new at this, so would that meet the criteria? I'd still need to get it cad plated, but it sounds like that would be a bad idea from your experience. Can you advise?

basically, I'm a computer guy that bought a 59 vet because I've always loved them and managed to scrape the money together with some hard work and luck

I've rebuilt carbs before and reassembled a steering wheel assembly. That's the extent of my gear-headedness. I'm probably better off waiting for the real deal to come along. I'm in no hurry.
