    1986 Rear Wheel Bearings

I have a noise comming from the rear end, it seems to be most pronounced in the 20 to 40 MPH range, and by process of elimination I think it is a wheel bearing. According to everything I have read it seems I need to change the Hub assembly. Is it possible to press a new bearing and seal into my hub? If not, why?

Ron the wheel bearings front/rear for the C4's are sealed and can be expensive from across the local GM parts counter. Any parts store can most likely get them. I bought GM Delco for my 85. You will need to buy a big allen head type socket to remove four retaining bolts. The axle nut requires a lot of foot pounds of torque to install. It is basically a remove and replace, no bearing clearances or bearing grease packing involved. An 86 service manual has all the details, if it is not available from the NCRS store, you can buy it from Helm Inc.

All C4 Corvettes use factory-assembled wheel hub/bearings at all 4 wheels. The units are not field serviceable and no component parts are available for them, anyway.

Might there be a way that someone could rebuild them? Possibly. Would I ever do it OR use a rebuilt assembly? ABSOLUTELY NEVER.

There are less expensive aftermarket assemblies out there (all are new, as far as I know). I wouldn't use these, either. For parts like these, I go with GM or Delco parts.

Those Goodyear tires make a lot of noise, especially if they have an odd wear pattern. Make sure that isn't your problem before changing out the bearings.

One more thing: the GM/Delco hub assemblies are expensive. For example, the rears, known as GM #7470501 and Delco #20-45, carry a GM list of $464.53 currently. However, you can purchase these through discount Delco dealers for about $225/each. If you consider what the cost would be to rebuild these things, assuming that they could be rebuilt, the parts alone would likely cost $100, or so. If you had to pay someone to do it, you'd never come out over the cost of a new one.

Personally, I think that the idea of factory-assembled wheel bearings/hub assembly is a GREAT one. Believe me, most folks with 63-82 Corvettes wish that they could purchase a factory assembled, complete new rear wheel bearing assembly and simply "bolt-it-on".

Also, the FRONT wheel bearing/hub assembly for 1984-90 Corvettes is GM #12413041 also known as Delco #FW115. It carries a GM list of $384.29/each but can be purchased through a discount Delco dealer for about $250.
