What size nozzle would anyone suggest to use?

Nozzle size will depend on the type of gun (HVLP, conventional, gravity feed, siphon feed) and the manufacturer of the gun.

Gravity fed HVLP guns use smaller nozzles and conventional siphon guns use larger nozzles. Paint companies test their products with different makes and types of guns, and you can get the "best recommendation" from the paint companies' tech service sites. You can also Google the manufacturer of your paint gun and they may show the paint manufacturers recommendations on their site. See link to DeVilbiss/Binks below.

I haven't sprayed lacquer, but I'm thinking it's about like basecoat, maybe slighly less viscous...PPG shows basecoat nozzle sizes as 1.2-1.3mm for HVLP gravity fed, and 1.4-1.6mm for "Plus Technology" high efficiency suction guns.

Identify your gun type/manufacturer, and someone here with experience can give you a recommendation.

        Re: Laquer

My first attempts at shooting PPG acrylic lacquer were with a mid-price, gravity HVLP gun. Never quite laid down as flat as I thought it should.

Then I bought the Devilbiss GFG 670 "plus" gun, based on many recommendations I saw on multiple forums. It comes with 3 tips, and has a very high transfer efficiency. Around 65% as I recall.

Well, let me tell you - this gun is the bomb! What a difference.

Now the pros will recommend Sata or Iwata, but at twice the cost, they're hard to justify for the hobbyist (IMHO).

Anyway, to anyone who's agonizing over which gun to buy for topcoating, both single stage and BC/CC - check out the DVB 670 plus. Less than $275 with cup and 3 tips (metal). And made in the USofA.
