Re: Bubba's been to visit me!

    Marty,

    ....just a thought(or two)..

Do you have the stock distributor & coil, and is there actually a ballast resistor?.....or

Maybe someone replaced the coil with one that has the "internal" ballast resistor. You may have to remove it from the mount to see as the label/info might be covered up. If so the stock ballast would be bypassed.

If there is a ballast, is it connected to the coil? If there's a second wire on the same terminal, that's the one that would normally go to the solenoid so when you crank it gets 12V to get better spark when cranking drops voltage. The other side of it would go to ignition switch to run lower voltage to save the points from arcing too much.

Re: Bubba's been to visit me!

        Rich,
The car has it's original coil (270 BR) and it's original dist.(1112247) intact. The car does experience long cold crank time but I attributed that to possible leaking welch plugs in the carb (float bowl low), the carb is out right now being redone.

        THANKS for your input....Marty

Re: Hate to disagree, but I think some have it...

            Dennis,

Do you think this may add to a longer than normal "cold crank" situation after the car's been sitting a few days?

            THANKS....Marty

i'll answer for dipstick, who is attending morning services as we speak. yes, with only 6 volts going to points during cranking, the sbc will be more difficult to start. mike
