    Re-doing tran. and case

I'm in the process of re-building the tran. on my L79 ,67' roadster. The exterior of the case is pretty beat! Any suggestions on how to get it looking like new or close to it? Any thoughts or tricks on rebuilding the gears would also be! Thanks in advance!! Mike#34566

    Cleaning:
Any solvent that cuts grease(brake cleaner, gasoline, etc) then brush throughly clean with soap and water. A light sand or bead blasting if possible, just enough to clean it. Of course this would be best if the transmission is disassembled. Aluminum mag cleaner will bring back some of the luster.

    Rebuilding:
I sell a Muncie Rebuild Guide called EasyStep on EBAY. If you can read, you can rebuild!

Please do not use gasoline as a solvent. I was burned very badly 30 years ago using gas as a solvent and am still having surgeries to repair damage.......I learned the hard way

        Solvent

I had a heck of a time finding a good, affordable solvent when I first bought my degreasing tank. After MUCH searching about, I finally found the ideal degreaser.
        .
It's a naptha-based solvent, sold as "solvent 143", by my local petroleum products dealer (Tucson Fuel). Cost is about $17.50 for a 5 gallon can.
It works great, has a very low evaporation rate, not highly flammable, and will not cause your skin to peel (nitrile gloves still recommended!).

For grease, this stuff is the ticket.

Is "Solvent 143" suitable for use in a parts washer with a circulating pump ?

Larry, is a Muncie really something that a car owner with average mechanical skills can rebuild themself? Mine needs synchronizers, but I've been hesitant to tackle this project on my own. Any special tools needed? I'd love to try it, just don't want to get in over my head (it would be really embarassing carrying a box full of parts in to the mechanic and trying to talk him into re-assemblying something that I couldn't get back together!)

            Thanks,

              Re: Re-doing tran. and case

As I have stated many times the Munice transmission is very simple to rebuild. With instructions in a few key areas to watch out for it is not more complicated than putting a bicycle together. Examples: 1. The gland nut is left hand reversed threaded. 2. The two gear changing sliders look the same at first glance, but note the difference in their direction and edges. One has a beveled edge, if you get them swapped it will rub the reverse idler gear when shifted to second (this is the most common mistake). What sets EasyStep apart from others is the wording which leaves no question in your mind what to do or how to do it. I have had hundreds of satisfied users, that I will guarantee your success and assist you in anyway.
              Just do it!
              Take care,
              Larry

Forgot the tools comment. The only have to have tool is a heavy duty flat nose clip spreader. The gland nut tool can be made by using a lawn edger blade. It is the perfect size and ten times the quality steel of the $30 wrenches you can buy. It and all others you will have around the garage are explained.
