    C3-Cost to rebuild Small Block

I live in Florida. I'm curious what I can expect to pay to have my small block (350/270 hp) engine rebuilt. I want to rebuild it to factory specs, so what should I expect?

    Thanks,
    Greg

That depends on you and your engine builders definition of factory specs. A rebuild job around northern Ohio runs $2500 to $3000. If the heads need extensive work the price will be higher, same with the block. You didn't say how many miles are on the engine. You are asking for a specific answer to a ballpark question.

The engine has 62/K miles on it. It blows a little white smoke, doesn't burn much oil. I had to replace a freeze plug about 4 weeks ago and I think another is leaking now (notice a few drops). I have a local corvette mechanic giving me a quote for replacing ALL the freeze plugs. Depending on the quote, I might be better off rebuilding the engine entirely - I don't know. I just started considering it and I wanted to get an idea.

            Thanks!

I live in Central Texas and have rebuilt my 58 and 84 motors. I had less than 1K in each of them? And, this is our local "most" reputable machine shop who does motors for the local racers. In my case, I disassembled the motors and delivered heads, crank and block to them. The heads cost me $100 each to rebuild. They provided me the rebuild kit, inspected and cleaned everything, bored block, installed cam bearings, and ground crank--then they gave it back to me to assemble. In fact, I think they even cleaned my intake and exhaust manifolds too. Even if they had assembled the block I don't believe it would have cost much more. Am I missing something? Are you looking for the "builder" who takes it out of the car and gives you back a perfectly "NCRS" correctly detailed rebuild and installation? If so, I am sure it will cost plenty more.

                        Hi Greg,

$2,500.00 with me performing the tear down and re-build.

Most of the cost was a total re-build of the heads that ran $450.00 each.

The rest was hot tanking, magnafluxing, line boring, taking the cylinders 0.030 over, new cam, pistons, connecting rod inspections and gasket kit.

Unless something rears it's ugly head with them doing the re-build, I venture a guess between $1,500.00 to $2,000.00 tops

Sounds like your engine only needs a freshening up.

But first, I'd do a compression and leak down test before you jump into a total re-build Greg. You just might find that you only need a good valve job.

                        Chuck
