Need a part number checked please

I phoned this into the General and it came back as no good or discontinued with no description. Part number is 8717639 group 10.266 Lk.Cyl.-Uncoded. I believe this to be for the locking rear compartment on 69-78. Could some one let me know what they find(year and application), its not listed in my GM parts manual.

    Thanks Ron

    Ron----

Yes, GM #8717639 is, indeed, an uncoded lock cylinder which is is used for the rear compartment lock. It was a SERVICE part first applicable to the 1969 model year and later extended to SERVICE all 1969-82 Corvette rear compartment lock applications. It was discontinued several years ago without supercession.

Believe it or not, the uncoded lock cylinder for 1968 Corvette rear compartment lock applications was different. Originally of GM #7798996, it was later changed to GM #1154261 and is currently available under that number for about 14 bucks. This part also SERVICES 56-57 storage compartment locks and 63-67 glove box locks.

Joe, I think you might have left out a digit in the 115 part number you mentioned above?

It's certainly an "oddball" type part number, but that's the whole of it. GM #1154261, a 7 digit number. I think that there are a lot of 8 digit numbers out there that begin with "115" and that may be what you thought that this one was.

This is actually a fairly old part number; it's at least 20 years old but it became the SERVICE replacement for a variety of applications when the original SERVICE part numbers for those applications were discontinued. Among possibly others, the GM #1154261 replaced GM #7778996 and GM #4566764.

Joe, You are absolutely correct, I was reading the wrong line. That block of numbers was issued to the General Motors Warehousing and Distribution Division, Flint, Michigan. It would most definitely be a service part number.
I should have known better than try to correct "Mr. Numbers"-----sorry.

No need for apologies. I welcome questions and cross-checking of any information which I provide. Believe me, "Mr. Numbers" screws up numbers all the time. This occurs either by sheer mistake or by "transposition" and/or "typographic" error. The important thing is that any needed corrections get made and accurate information ultimately results. Any effect on my ego is entirely secondary to that over-arching priority. I mean this sincerely.
